# Scroll reading text

A block of text that fades in letter by letter as the visitor scrolls through the pinned section. Good for a manifesto, mission statement, or short editorial line.

## Settings

### Layout

| Setting      | Description                                                                                                                        |
| ------------ | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Width        | **Page** — Keeps the content within the page width set in your theme settings. **Custom** — Sets a specific maximum content width. |
| Custom width | Maximum width of the text. Shown when Width is Custom.                                                                             |
| Alignment    | Horizontal alignment of all content.                                                                                               |

### Gap

| Setting | Description                      |
| ------- | -------------------------------- |
| Desktop | Space between blocks on desktop. |
| Mobile  | Space between blocks on mobile.  |

### Background

| Setting        | Description                                         |
| -------------- | --------------------------------------------------- |
| Media          | Add a background image or video for the section.    |
| Video          | A Shopify-hosted background video. Autoplays muted. |
| Image          | Background image.                                   |
| Image (mobile) | Separate background image for mobile.               |
| Overlay        | Adds a color layer over the background media.       |
| Overlay color  | Color and opacity of the overlay.                   |

### Color

| Color scheme | Colors for the section. |

### Padding

| Setting           | Description                                    |
| ----------------- | ---------------------------------------------- |
| Top / Bottom      | Space above and below the section.             |
| Custom for mobile | Set separate top and bottom padding on mobile. |

## Available Blocks

### Editorial text

The text that reveals on scroll. You can also place images inline in the sentence — see [Editorial text](/helix/theme-blocks/basic/editorial-text.md) for the full settings.

| Setting       | Description                                                                             |
| ------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Text          | The phrase or sentence to reveal on scroll.                                             |
| Size          | Text size, or Custom for full control over style, size, line height, spacing, and case. |
| Scroll speed  | How quickly the text reveals as the visitor scrolls.                                    |
| Start opacity | How faint each letter is before it fades in.                                            |
| Inline images | Up to five images placed inside the sentence with `[img1]`–`[img5]` tokens.             |
| Padding       | Space above and below the block, with optional separate mobile values.                  |

The same block is available in other sections, where it drives its own reveal as it crosses the viewport. Inside this section the reveal follows the pinned scroll instead, so **Scroll speed** replaces the block's own reveal switch.
